? CINCO LAGOS: interconnected series of lakes visible from a mirador (Tip: if you walk down to the lakes, you can hire a small boat to visit interesting natural features, including a cenote!) Here are my picks for the best lakes to visit at #LagunasdeMontebello ?? But with 59 amazing lakes, how do you choose which to see?! ? If you saw my last post, you’ll already know that Lagunas de Montebello is a BEAUTIFUL national park in southern Chiapas, right on the border with Guatemala.

? Roberto Barrios is 1hr from Palenque, Chiapas Pictured here is the 3rd waterfall, just one of the AMAZING places to play- think of it as an adult playground & spend the day jumping, sliding, climbing & blowing bubbles ??♀️???♀️✨ So many of the waterfalls in Chiapas have a limited swimming area & very few will let you actually get in the water around the falls themselves, so Roberto Barrios is pretty unique. The best thing about Roberto Barrios is that you can climb ALL over the falls, jump from the top into deep pools below, swim absolutely anywhere, and really create your own adventure! Perhaps my favourite of the MANY waterfalls we visited in Chiapas was Cascadas Roberto Barrios, a series of 5 falls located near Palenque ?

⏰ Allow at LEAST 2 full days to explore & relax- I’ll share more photos of the hot caves, the turquoise river, the steam tunnels & some of the other thermal pools soon, but trust me when I say there is SO MUCH to do here & you’ll wish you had a week! ? There’s also a hotel onsite & rooms start at just 750p ($37USD) for 2 people ⛺️ Camping (in a vehicle or tent) is FREE right along the beautiful riverfront- you’ll need to pay for the current day & the next day in order to stay overnight, but if you depart before 8am, you’ll be issued a refund of those 150p ? Entry is 150p per person ($7.50USD) & parking is an additional 30p per day ? Grutas Tolantongo is located 4hrs from Mexico City in the state of Hidalgo I’d seen photos of these incredible limestone thermal pools before we visited, but I just did NOT expect how beautiful they would be in person… or how much MORE there is to enjoy than just the famous pools! Here’s what you should know ?? VISITING MEXICO’S BEST HOT SPRINGS ??? This man spares no crease in his “massage”. Intermittently, I get warm water thrown over me to wash off the soap- a pleasant, albeit shocking, surprise.

I can now definitively confirm that Aristo did indeed whisper what I thought he whispered. The next hour is a blur of shower gel and foaming cleansers and, yes, loofahs. Now I’m lying on the table, taking off my top as per instruction, and I’m getting some sort of exfoliating leg massage. I make a move to lie on the table, which looks suspiciously picnic-like, but I don’t even make it horizontal before I have my swim bottoms ripped off. Eventually, I get my knock and make my way out in the light, passing Aristo in the process, who looks at me with wide eyed fear and mouths something that looks puzzlingly like “foreskin”.īefore I know much what to expect, I’m in the next room with our nice Asian host-a Japanese man, as it were. Aristo goes first, while I endure total sensory deprivation in the pitch-black sauna. We enjoy a stifling herbal sauna in the rear of some man’s home, and then are called individually for the massage component of the evening. Despite having an address and vague directions, we get hopelessly lost and settle for a random spa that we’ve just stumbled across. We hire bikes and pedal 8kms to the station, only to learn that the price is actually the same. In an effort to salvage the day, we ride off in search of a massage parlour, hoping someone can rub the embarrassment right out of us. Now preparing to bid Vientiane farewell, we try to save money by buying tickets direct from the bus station rather than the hotel.
